SUGGESTED ITINERARY
Note: Regent cannot take any responsibility for the opening/closure of the highland interior trails due to road and weather conditions.
DAY 1 UK – ICELAND
Fly UK/Iceland. Collect hired vehicle on arrival at Keflavik International Airport before proceeding to your overnight accommodation in the southern countryside. Overnight Selfoss Region: FossHotel or similar.
DAY 2 SOUTH - ‘KJOLUR’ INTERIOR - NORTH
Visit Keri∂ volcanic crater and the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall and the nearby Geysir hot springs before entering the ‘Kjölur’ highland trail where an unforgettable highland adventure awaits! Experience a unique and dramatic landscape as you drive northwards, over mountain passes towards the fertile valley of the Skagafjordur district, stopping on the way at the colourful Hveravellir thermal area where you can enjoy a bathe. Overnight Saudarkrokur: Fosshótel or similar.
DAY 3 NORTH
Visit Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. Make a stop at Go∂afoss – the Waterfall of the Gods. Explore the natural wonders of Lake Myvatn, the hot springs at Námaskar∂ and the lava fields at Krafla. Recommend a 3 Hour Whale Watching Boat Trip from Husavik Harbour along with a visit to the Whale museum. Alternatively explore the Tjornes Peninsula and Asbyrgi, the horse-shoe shaped canyon, along with Dettifoss - Europe’s mightiest waterfall. Overnight Laugar/Húsavík: Fosshotel or similar. Optional Activity: Whale Watching Boat Trip from Husavik Harbour.
DAY 4 NORTH - ‘SPRENGISANDUR’ INTERIOR - SOUTH
A long drive with many natural wonders along the way. Visit the beautiful Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall before entering the highland trail of ‘Sprengisandur’, a barren rocky desert with the great icecaps Vatnajokull & Hofsjokull on either side.
Note: a number of un-bridged rivers need to be ford on this route. At Hrauneyjar, on the southern edge of the interior, continue on road #26 to reach Hella. The next three nights will be spent in Iceland’s southern countryside Overnight Selfoss Region: Fosshótel or similar.
DAY 5 SOUTH
Today we recommend a drive along Iceland’s south shores to experience black sand beaches and rugged lava fields. Passing the beautiful waterfalls Seljalandfoss and Skogafoss, the Eyjafjallajokull glacier and Iceland’s fourth largest icecap Myrdalsjokull to the southernmost town of Vik i Myrdal. Optional Activity: Snowmobiling on Myrdalsjokull glacier.
DAY 6 SOUTH
Experience the region of Landmannalaugar – a natural pearl hidden in the highlands of Iceland, where you will find hot and cold springs, amazing lava fields, volcanic landscape with explosion craters, magnificent rhyolite peaks and blue mountain lakes – just pure unspoiled nature in all it’s glory! Or spend the day in Thjórsárdalur visiting the ruins of the viking farm Stöng, the nearby waterfalls and canyon of Gjáinn, the remarkable waterfalls Hjálparfoss and Háifoss, all dominated by the volcano Mount Hekla.
DAY 7 SOUTH - REYKJAVIK
Before driving back to Reykjavik, spend the day exploring one of the most charmingly beautiful sites and a ‘must-see’ during your stay in Iceland - Thórsmörk a forested glacial valley situated between the glaciers, Myrdalskjokull, Eyjafjallajokull and Tindafjallajokull, reached by fording un-bridged glacial rivers and streams, adding a touch of excitement to your journey. You will have a unique opportunity to see nature at its best, imagine a forested glacial valley full of flowers, braided rivers and clear streams surrounded by snowy peaks and glaciers, then you will have some idea of what awaits you in this spectacular region. Overnight Reykjavik: Fosshótel or similar.
DAY 8 ICELAND - UK
If returning on a late afternoon flight you will have the opportunity to visit the world famous Blue Lagoon on the Reykjanes Peninsula with time to relax and enjoy a bathe in the bright blue mineral-rich geothermally heated waters before driving back to Keflavik International Airport to return your hired Vehicle and connect with your flight back to the UK.
Optional Activity: Bathing in the Blue Lagoon.
