Iceland Fly Drive
A good map is a must. Not only does it act as a guide to Iceland’s roads and the countryside at large, it also contains a mine of other information. The Regent Book & Map Service have a selection of publications on Iceland for sale. Details are available on request.
For the traveller requiring complete independence the most popular and ideal
way to explore Iceland is by car. The Icelandic road network today covers some 14,000 Kms. The roads in general are gravel surfaces with the exception of towns and main roads, which are usually asphalted. The gravel surfaces, although regularly serviced can become rutted. Secondary roads in some cases will have loose gravel surfaces and can be quite narrow. Route 1, also known as the ‘Ring Road’, encircles the country and is partially asphalted. Under normal circumstances Route 1 is open year round and is used by the majority of tourists. With approximately 1450 kms. of travel we would recommend a minimum of six days rental in order to circle Route 1, with extra days allowing more time for sightseeing, relaxation and visiting places ‘off the beaten track’. Many of the major attractions can be found on, or just off the Ring Road. Along this route accommodation can be found, ranging from Camp Sites, Youth Hostels, Farmhouses, Private Homes, Guesthouses and Hotels. Generally it is possible to camp anywhere, however, we would recommend you stay in one of the 100 or so organised sites located around the Island. Before you arrive we would suggest you select in which direction you wish to travel and the places you wish to visit. Planning your day to day itinerary in too greater detail is probably not a good idea, due to such factors as road and weather conditions, even an un-scheduled stop or prolonged stay at a place of interest can throw your schedule into disarray.
Note: The highland roads through Iceland’s interior are open from the beginning of July, through to the end of August. It is essential a 4WD Vehicle
is driven to undertake any mountain track or road driving.
